The precipitate is then calcined to obtain Sc2O3 and subsequently fluorinated with hydrofluoric acid (HF) to finally obtain ScF3. Alternative methods to directly obtain ScF3 without using HF have also been developed.

    Scandium Fluoride exists in multiple polymorphs, with the low-temperature and high-pressure conditions leading to a cubic lattice of space group Pm¯3m with hexacoordinated Sc atoms forming corner-sharing octahedra. At increasing temperature and/or pressure, the material undergoes a phase transition and assumes a trigonal configuration (space group R¯3c) where the octahedra are rotated around their axes.
